My softball field is next to a pretty popular road and occasionally, people will yell things out at us when we play. It happens, we’re used to it, and normally they don’t really ever say anything meaningful.
Today, a guy in a big black jeep (maybe it was a hummer? either way, it was a big car) drove by and yelled “DYKES” out of his window at us. Now, I’m pretty sure everyone knows the little joke about girls who play softball, and yes, two girls on my team are gay and one is bi (I am one of the former), but it still kind of hurt to have someone yelling that us, simply because of the sport we play.
What makes a guy yell that at a bunch of high school girls and their coach? We were just practicing, he probably only saw us for about two seconds, yet he still felt the need to do that? I don’t care if there are connotations about the sport of softball, there’s no reason to do that. What the fuck is wrong with people?
I forgot how much I missed doing this.
Anytime someone says “We believe in you” in my head I always follow it up with “Oh two”. Seriously, every time I hear it, read it, say it. Every freaking time a phrase that’s supposed to be inspirational and heartwarming turns into “we believe in you oh two, we believe in yooouuuu….” and so on. Fuck.
This school has been my top choice for three years now and even though I’ve visited before (last spring), I’m really excited to go visit again. Even better, this time I’m going to meet the softball team and everything!
So my coach called me and told me there wasn’t much we could use for this video and a bunch of other stuff about how I’m a great person, but maybe playing college ball won’t work out and all I could do was keep asking that we at least try and make the video and see where it goes. Fuck that. I don’t care if I’m actually the worst player ever; I’ve spent over ten years playing this sport, I’m going to at least try to play in college. If they don’t think I’m good enough, okay, but I’m going to finish this video.
A reflection on softball, basically. Kind of long and about something half of you have no interest in, so it’s under a cut.

I just hope it doesn’t mess up tomorrow’s tournament.
